From tax risk to business growth: Winfred Namata Jumba joins S&L Advocates as Tax Director
Established in 1980, S&L Advocates is one of the oldest and largest law firms in Uganda, and a member firm of DLA Piper Africa. This week it announced international taxation expert Winfred Namata Jumba would be bringing her legal and audit firm experience to the team, as she has joined the firm as a Tax Director
Anticipating regulatory developments along with identifying opportunities for sustainable growth is central to Winfred Namata Jumba’s ambitions as she takes up her new role as Tax Director at leading Ugandan law firm S&L Advocates, a member firm of DLA Piper Africa.
“As I step into this role, my focus is firmly on the future, building, innovating, creating value and making meaningful contribution to the growth of the practice and the businesses we serve,” shared Winfred as her appointment was announced by the firm this week.
She added that helping clients navigate an increasingly complex tax environment means looking beyond immediate obligations to the decisions shaping their businesses’ futures.
“We are confident that Winfred’s addition strengthens our Tax Practice and positions us to serve our clients better on the full spectrum of tax advisory, structuring, compliance, and disputes,” said the leading Ugandan firm, which was originally established in 1980.
DLA Piper Africa, Uganda (S&L Advocates) has a varied and prestigious client base including local and multinational organisations across the financial services, energy, insurance, telecommunications, construction, private equity and manufacturing sectors, along with industry regulators, international financiers, and government agencies.
"Returning to tax practice at this stage of my career feels particularly meaningful," shared Winfred earlier this week. "My experiences across law, tax, and business have broadened my perspective on the role tax plays, not only in compliance, but in strategy, risk management, investment and sustainable business growth."
Winfred's experience in commercial law and specialist tax advice was developed through her past roles at KSMO Advocates, PKF Uganda, and PwC.
Alongside international taxation, transfer pricing, structuring and compliance, she has worked on tax disputes spanning objections, reconciliations, negotiations and settlements.
S&L Advocates was named Uganda Law Firm of the Year at the Chambers Africa Awards in both 2025 and 2026. As previously reported by Africa Legal, earlier this year James Mukasa Sebugenyi took the leadership baton from longstanding Managing Partner Barnabas Tumusingize to lead the firm into its exciting future. It also elevated Joseph Luswata to Head of Litigation & Dispute Resolution, and promoted commercial lawyer Josephine Muhaise from Principal Associate to Partner, among other internal promotions.
"I’m excited about the opportunity to help build a modern, commercially focused and forward-looking tax practice; one that anticipates change, embraces innovation and delivers practical solutions that create real value for clients," said Winfred. "Most importantly, I look forward to working with an exceptional team, learning from others, sharing experiences and contributing to something that has a lasting impact."
