Pioneering South African international mining company Gold Fields fortifies its operations by adding Samuel Mziwake
Originally established in 1887 to acquire and finance mining properties on the Witwatersrand, Gold Fields is now a global operation with eight mines across Africa, Australia, and the Americas. This month it has added longstanding in-house counsel Samuel Mziwake to its South African operations.
Stepping into a new role as Senior Legal Counsel at Gold Fields, a globally diversified gold producer with eight mines across South Africa, Ghana, Australia, Peru, and Chile, and a project in Canada, is an exciting milestone and new chapter in his professional journey, said long-time in-house counsel Samuel Mziwake,
Listed on both the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Gold Fields aims to create “positive and sustainable value” for employees, communities, capital providers, governments, and business partners.
“Gold Fields has long stood out to me for its commitment to sustainable mining, operational excellence, and forward-thinking leadership in the global resources sector,” said Mziwake when sharing the news, having served the last two and a half years as Senior Legal Specialist - Commercial at Exxaro Resources, one of South Africa’s top coal producers, and foremost black-empowered resource companies.
“I’m deeply honored to join such a dynamic legal team and contribute to driving strategic value, navigating complex corporate landscapes, and supporting the company’s vision,” adds Mziwake, an experienced in-house lawyer who first shifted from private practice in 2018, after being an associate at global firm Eversheds.
An LLM graduate of the University of the Free State, who also holds an MBA and a Masters in Business Leadership, and is currently studying for a Doctorate in Business Leadership at the Da Vinci Institute, Mziwake has served in a variety of in-house legal roles for South African and international companies in the mining, credit protection and information solutions, textiles retail, and logistics sectors.
